75th Anniversary
The 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment and Prohibition, was submitted by Congress to the States on February 21, 1933, for ratification by constitutional convention. The Acting U.S. Secretary of State declared the Amendment to have been duly-ratified on December 5, 1933, with Iowa having voted for ratification on July 10, 1933.
The Iowa General Assembly convened the 1933-34 Extraordinary Session and, on March 6, 1934, passed the Iowa Liquor Control Act. The Act, creating the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission, became law upon publication, having been “deemed of immediate importance.” 1933-34 Iowa Acts, Chapter 24, Sec. 89. On March 8, 1934, Iowa’s Secretary of State, Mrs. Alex Miller, certified that the Act had been published in the Ottumwa Daily Courier and the Fort Madison Evening Democrat, thus, creating the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission.
On March 8, 2009, the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission officially celebrated its 75th Anniversary.
