HCA in Iowa

The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission is looking into the future of highly concentrated alcohol (HCA), including Everclear, a 151 proof Hot 100 product. The Commission will not necessarily be looking at banning the liquor, but the possibility of tightening regulations and educating the public on Everclear and other HCA products.

A public forum was held on January 26, 2010, at Drake University in Des Moines. Administrator Walding gave a PowerPoint presentation entitled "I Think...". Read the Times-Dephic story about the forum.

A second public forum and commission meeting was held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus. The Commission made four recommendations to the Division regarding HCA.

  1. Cap on High Proof Spirits.
  2. Size Limitations.
  3. Product Registration.
  4. Educational Program.
